Here
are details of changes made to the site since the end of May 2000.
July 2001
The SLN project came
to an end on June 30th, 2001. This means that funding via SLN
for facilitators and tutor candidates taking this unit (Providing
Online Support for Learners) is no longer available.
If you are interested
in taking this unit, it may be possible for you to get funding
from your employer or via government-run schemes, depending on
your circumstances. Training organisations offering this unit
may be able to advise you on this. They will also tell you how
much it costs to do the unit without financial assistance.
If resident in Scotland,
you can also get information on funding opportunities, including
Individual Learning Accounts (ILAs), from learndirectscotland.
You can contact learndirectscotland
on:
0808
100 9000
or
visit their website at:
www.learndirectscotland.com
Even
if you are not resident in Scotland, you can still take this unit
via distance learning. For further information please contact
any Scottish training provider that offers the unit. You should
be able to get details of who offers the unit from learndirectscotland.
This
site remains available for the use of all training providers and
all course participants, but there are no guarantees that this
availability will continue. These pages may disappear, or be moved
to a different location without notice, as their hosting and maintenance
is no longer being paid for. It is suggested that you obtain a
local copy if you want to guarantee continued access to materials.
To do this, either copy the individual pages you want, or download
the entire site. Remember that not all features will function
offline (searches, being a case in point) or if attempted from
a local copy of the site (e.g. forms).
Although
the site is no longer officially maintained, and any work I do
on it is now purely on a voluntary basis, I would still really
appreciate it if you could continue to send me advice, suggestions
for improvement, and reports of any dead links you notice. To
do this, please use the email address at the bottom of the page,
or this form:

June 2001
Updated link to Ashley
Montgomery & Julie K. Little-McGill, 'Creating and Supporting
Online Learning Communities: a model for distance education' on
links page.
Updated all links
to 'Web
Based Teaching Methodologies'
on the nine pages of the site on which it appears. [See links
page.]
Updated all links
to Burgstahler
S, "Teaching on the Net: What's the Difference?"
[See links page.]
March 2001
Uploaded new zip file
(see downloads page).
Updated faq page.
Rechecked all 16,044
links (14,847 Internal, 0 Broken, 1,197 External).
Cut down the size
of the new zip file by taking out unused versions of pages (these
were included in earlier zip files for development purposes, and
are still available - just download an older zip file instead!).
Improved (and retested)
accessibility by ensuring that images have Alt tags (to make things
easier for people using screenreaders and non-graphical browsers).
November
2000
Uploaded print
version of SLN section in the First Steps area. Put a link
to it on the SLN section's contents page.
Added links to UK
ECDL site to SLN section.
September
2000
Uploaded new front
page with a kind of 'welcome lounge' for new users (first
steps pages and the about this site
page).
Changed the name of
the 'linear route' to 'step-by-step route'. The reasoning behind
this is that some people, understandably, have found 'linear'
confusing in that it could be taken to suggest that it should
be worked through from beginning to end (it shouldn't!), rather
than be dipped into at appropriate points at appropriate times
(which is the idea).
Fixed erroneous URL
on questionnaire
page (it didn't stop the form working, but could have put
people off using the form!).
Added html version
of self-assessment questionnaire.
Added links to timesheets
and other SLN documents to downloads
page.
July 2000
since beta1.zip
30.6.00:
Uploaded self-assessment
questionnaire (a Word document) to downloads folder, and added
link to the questionnaire to downloads,
how to proceed, which
route, and faq pages.
The self-assessment
questionnaire gives you a simple set of questions that helps you
to identify what you need to do (in terms of deciding which route
to follow, which activities to do, and what evidence to gather),
from starting the unit to completion.
Even if you have already
completed the unit, or are close to completion, it would be helpful
if you could take a look at the questionnaire and let
us have your comments. [20.7.00]

Created which
route? page (new: 29.6.00). with simple diagnostic.
Updated how
to proceed page: added links to fast
track guide (new: 29.6.00), assessment
guide and unit
specification.
Created html versions
of fast track guide.: 7 shorter pages,
or one long page that serves as a print
version.
Added links to fast
track guide versions to downloads page.
[The Word document is Word
97, and 159KB. The Word 6/95 version weighed in at at a whopping
1.4 MB, and so has not been included. There's also a plain
text version (13KB), and a zip
file of the Word document (106KB).]
Uploaded Word versions
of fast track guide, and zipped versions.
Took duplicate links
(introduced only a couple of days ago) to intro guide and glossary
out of the navbars of all pages in the step-by-step route
that already display the links within the route part of the navbar.
This should remove the confusion of duplicates. [28.6.00]
Put link to this 'what's
new' page in all navbars.
Put link to evaluation
questionnaire in navbar on all pages except those within routes
which already have it displayed in the section of the navbar for
that route.
Put link to evaluation
questionnaire outside step-by-step route in navbar on home
page, and slimmed down links to routes in the navbar to avoid
repetition of this and other links. [The intro guide, glossary,
etc. are in the step-by-step route, because the step-by-step
route is the online version of the complete paper-based resource
pack]
Updated act1.5.html
in the activity route. Added related links.
Updated act1.4.html
in the activity route. Added related links.
Updated act1.3.html
in the activity route. Added related links.
Updated act1.1.html
in the activity route. Added related links.
Changed grey vertical
line to coloured line on every page in the colour-coded routes.
Updated page titles
of numerous pages so that they display something more meaningful
at the beginning of the title (important when viewing search results).
[The 'title', in this sense, is what you see in the title bar
of the browser window when viewing a page. This is not necessarily
the same as any title you see on the page itself. These title-bar
titles are often missing from pages on the web, which means that
in a search engine's results page they appear as 'untitled document'
even if once you open them they actually do have a title displayed
on the page.]
Added alphabet links
to glossary.
before 26 June:
Uploaded posfl_alpha4.zip
(1.77MB), which includes all changes detailed below.
Changed navigation
on all pages to include/repeat in the navbar some of the links
to parts of the step-by-step route, so that they would
be less likely to be missed by people using the assessment and
activity routes. The extra links are to pages that are likely
to be used whatever route someone happens to be using at the time.
[These are pages such as home, introductory guide, glossary, links,
downloads, feedback, FAQ, and what's new. Some have been given
a cell of their own in the navbars of all pages, and the background
of all their cells in the navbars are now white. It may not look
as pretty with more white and less blue, but it should be a bit
more logical. ;) Please let us know
if you think the change is counterproductive, or have other suggestions
for improvement.] You can find the previous scheme here
for comparison. [fixed: 28.6.00 - comments on current version
welcome]
Changed the indexing
of the site and search parameters used by Atomz.com to include
all pages at the root level (home page, downloads, what's new,
etc.). Previously only the three routes (linear, assessment and
activity) were searched. Removed 'sounds like' searching, which
can produce confusing results, even though it has the advantage
of producing results when keywords are mispelt. Please let
us know if you preferred the results you used to get, or whether
the search facility appears to work even better now. [Please note
that you cannot compare current searching with how it used to
be, except from memory! The previous version's search facility
searches pages in the current site, with current
search settings.]
Added many questions
(though not yet answers) to the FAQ page
and would like feedback on which to
keep, and what else to add! :)
Added this page. [what's
new]
Made it clear on the
activity route's contents page that 'ss1' and 'ss2' are study
sections 1 and 2.
Added pdf files to
downloads folder and updated downloads
page.
Added link to Acrobat
Reader to downloads page.
Put link to Word document
used for evaluation of these online resources on both the downloads
page and the feedback page.
Added link to evaluation
questionnaire to feedback page.
Fixed broken link
to activity route on home page. [!]
Fixed a plethora of
links sitewide that worked on a server, but did not when read
locally (links ending in / or /. were changed to /index.html).
Fixed smattering of
broken links sitewide to copyright
and disclaimer pages.
Updated disclaimer
page.
Took link to site
map out of home page. [The site map has
now returned, with a complete overview of the site (if you think
anything is missing, please let
us know. You can use the site map
to get to any page on the site with one click. The site map is
linked to from every page, making any page on the site accessible
with two clicks from wherever you happen to be.]
Added a few links
to the links page.
Added related links
to pages in the activities
route.
Updated many pages
in the assessment route.
still seeing 'old'
pages?
Please note that you
may not see any changes unless you refresh (reload) pages. Click
on the Refresh or Reload button in your browser's toolbar, or
right-click anywhere on the page that is not a 'hotspot' (a regular
text link, or an image that's a link, or a button) and select
Refresh/Reload.
It also helps to clear
your browser's cache regularly, as this usually ensures that current
pages are loaded. This is still no guarantee, however, if your
organisation uses a local proxy that keeps serving you with older
versions of pages you request.
Please let
us know if you cannot see pages with changes referred to on
this 'what's new' page.
If this happens to
you, one solution is to download the most recent zip file and
view the site locally (though you'll miss out on the most recent
of updates that way). Another solution is to talk to the people
who control the proxy and get them to clear all forthweb.net/sln/posfl/
files or neurvana.com/sln/posfl/ files or posfl.co.uk files (all
three locations have the same files) from their cache every week
or so. This can be automated, so don't worry, it isn't such an
unreasonable request as it might at first appear to be.
