step-by-step route: study section 2

Part C - Providing online support for learners in practice

Effective communication

CMC raises many barriers not found in face-to-face contact that is typical of most traditional educational settings. The computer interface slows interaction and the computer screen robs users of the familiar visual cues that help us all adapt our communication style. Even for those with strong literacy skills, communication through electronic text is a challenge. Studies have shown that email and threaded discussion use a style and culture that falls somewhere between communication using the telephone and letters, but is identifiably different from these traditional media. In your research for Study Section 1, you will have read analyses of the strengths and weaknesses of various types of CMC as learning tools and seen many suggestions for good practice in this new learning environment. In Part B of this study section you will have prepared your own guidelines for or with your learners. In this section you will document how you have developed your own practice to make the most effective use of the online learning support system(s) you are using.

Timing of communication

In any learning environment where learners are isolated, the timing of communication is vital. If response times are not short, or more importantly predictable, learners can quickly become disillusioned and withdraw from the online medium.

In your induction, you will have established an expected level of service with your learners. In this activity, you will show how you have met the standards you have set.
