Part
A - An overview
What
is online support?
|
In
any learning situation, the tutor/facilitator is instrumental
in establishing a learner support network and ensuring that each
individual learner can access a variety of support mechanisms
which meet their own individual learning needs. Learning support
is provided in a variety of ways and is often tailored to meet
the needs of an individual learner.
Traditional
methods of providing learning support include:
- face-to-face
meetings and tutorials with tutors/facilitators and other learners
-
use of telephone calls and fax messages to facilitate communication
between facilitators and learners
-
written support where tutors/facilitators can monitor learner
progress and provide learners with written feedback and advice
on work submitted.
In
an online learning environment, it is possible to combine more
traditional methods of learning support with online support, for
example, where tutors/facilitators use available network technologies
to support the learners and to guide their learning activities.
The
key features of online support include communication and interaction
with:
- the
tutor/facilitator (e.g. for instruction, guidance, advice, exposition,
clarification, discussion and feedback)
-
other participants on a course (for discussion, clarification
and sharing ideas and resources)
-
access to course materials and other resources (e.g. access
to: information, instruction, content and library resources).
In
Study Section 1 Part B you will be given
the opportunity to explore in more detail the types of tools which
can be used to provide effective online learning support to learners.
