Part D - The strengths and weaknesses of online learning

What are the strengths of online learning?

The main strengths of online learning are that it is:

  • accessible - learners can log on at any time from wherever they have browser access to the Internet
  • learner-centred - learners are encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning
  • interactive - learners should not feel that they are learning in isolation; they are encouraged to interact with other learners and the tutor/facilitator.

Often unstated, but very important additional advantages of online learning are that it:

  • builds up learners' skills in using ICT (Information and Communications Technology), which is of vital importance in today's job marketplace
  • relies extensively on text, and should help learners develop reading strategies and improve their ability to express themselves in writing.

The skills practised in being an online learner will serve learners well in the modern world of lifelong learning.
