Part F - Strategies for evaluating the learner experience in an online environment

Introducing evaluation

So far in the programme, you have had the opportunity to explore how information and communication technologies can be used to assist learning.

The big question is: does technology really improve learning and enhance the quality of the learner's learning experience?

Generally, there is a lack of systematic evidence on the impact of information technology on learning. This part of the section looks at the process of evaluation.

It is essential that as part of online programme planning, development and delivery you develop an evaluation framework to collect evidence which will shed some light on the impact of the technology on the learners and their learning experience.

Evaluation will allow you to identify what to:

  • stop doing
  • start doing
  • continue doing.

Where improvements are required in:

  • courseware/learning material
  • your performance
  • your learners' performance.

There are many ways in which you can try to evaluate a learner's online learning experience. This part of the section simply provides some practical advice and guidelines you may wish to follow. Ultimately, however, your evaluation strategy and the evaluation tool(s) you use will be influenced by your own personal situation.
