step-by-step route: study section 1

Introduction

Welcome to Study Section 1

This section relates to Outcome 1 of the SQA Unit Providing Online Support for Learners - An Introduction.

(See also: Outcome 1 in the Assessment Guide)

Learning objectives of this study section are to:

  • develop a knowledge and understanding of how different Information and Communications Technology (ICT) tools can be used effectively to support learners who are learning online
  • reflect on the implications for you, your learners or trainees and your institution.

More specifically, this section aims to:

Part A - An overview

  • provide an overview of online learning and online support and the major factors influencing growth in this method of course delivery

Part B - Methods of assessing online learning tools and techniques

  • present methods for assessing the potential uses and implications of online support tools and techniques

Part C - The differences in approach and practice of supporting learners online

  • explore the differences in approach and practice of supporting learners online to other methods of supporting learners

Part D - The strengths and weaknesses of online learning

  • evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of online learning

Part E - Strategies for integrating online support techniques into a learning programme

  • identify appropriate strategies for integrating online support techniques into a learning programme

Part F - Strategies for evaluating the learner experience in an online environment

  • identify appropriate strategies for evaluating the learner experience in an online environment.

Study time

It is expected that you will spend approximately 15 hours on this section (i.e. all the activities you undertake with your group - under the guidance of your facilitator, in reaction to the needs of members of the group - leading up to completion of assessment 1). This is only a rough guide, however, and the important thing is that you continue to make steady progress on acquiring evidence for both of your assessments, and keep in touch with your facilitator.
