Evaluating the learner experience

Evaluation models

A number of models for evaluating a learner's experience (regardless of the method of delivery) have emerged recently in education sectors. Many of these models place great emphasis on the process of self-evaluation.

Scottish Office

The Scottish Office guidelines on quality improvement through self-evaluation, "Quality Matters", recommend that the evaluation of the student (learner) experience should concentrate on the following elements:

  • programme design
  • equipment and materials
  • staff
  • the teaching process
  • student achievement
  • guidance and learner support
  • quality improvement.

Further Education Development Agency (FEDA)

The Further Education Development Agency in the report "Evaluation of Learning with IT" recommends that the evaluation of the learner experience should concentrate on the following elements:

  • curriculum delivery
  • degree of student motivation
  • flexibility of time
  • fulfilling student expectations
  • lifelong learning skills
  • learner retention
  • value added information skills
  • value added IT skills
  • widening participation.

This model states that improving the quality of learning provision for the learner is a factor in each of the above categories.

The FEDA model can be obtained in full from the Web at the following address:

http://www.feda.ac.uk/quilt/RPM050.asp

There is nothing to stop you from developing your own evaluation model.

Evaluation strategy

Your on-line learning evaluation strategy should:

  • define your own model, stating what elements you wish to evaluate
  • clearly state what you aim to achieve (your objectives) and identify what you think the outcomes will be
  • specify your evaluation methodology stating what evaluation tools you plan to use and when you plan to use them (e.g. during the programme or at the end of the programme)
  • ensure that the evaluation of online learning is an integral part of your organisation's process for evaluating learning and quality improvement.
