Part B - Methods of assessing online learning tools and techniques

Assignment 1

You are now ready to do your first assignment. This exercise will allow you to apply some of the readings and discussions you have been having to your own situation. The assignment will also give you the opportunity to get some formal feedback from your facilitator on your progress.

If you are unsure of what is expected of you in the assignment, please do not hesitate to contact your facilitator immediately.

Assignment 1

AIMS

- Prepare for the final assessment.

- Provide an opportunity for:

  • facilitator and peer feedback
  • consciousness raising on key issues in providing effective learning support

INSTRUCTIONS

Using a learning programme/course you are familiar with (e.g. one that you currently teach or support), outline an online learning support system which will ensure that your learners can work effectively and maximise their learning experience.

In this assignment your main priority is the learner. Outline a support system that fully takes into account the needs of all your learners, and is optimal, given the resources available (including your own time).

Your outline needs to be set in context as follows:

  • subject of learning programme/course
  • type of institution (e.g. school, FE college, university, commercial training provider, in-house workplace training facility)
  • method of course delivery (e.g. full-time on campus, distance learning).

Your outline must also specify the tools learners will require to participate in the programme and receive support (e.g. software tools and hardware).

Your outline must ensure that learners:

  • are properly inducted into the programme/course and can use the online tools used in the programme/course effectively
  • access programme/course materials and learning support materials
  • contact you when they need help and advice
  • can contact and seek feedback and advice from other learners on the course
  • monitor their own learning and progress
  • submit assignments/assessments and other work for facilitator feedback and marking
  • discuss issues with other learners and with you and any other facilitators, tutors or invited experts.

Your outline must also allow you to:

  • monitor learner progress
  • check learner understanding
  • provide guidance and direction to individual learners and groups of learners
  • give feedback on assignments and group discussion on a one-to-one basis and on a one-to- many basis
  • intervene when appropriate
  • motivate learners.

Your outline can include a mix of online and offline support tools. However, you must clearly state which tool(s) you will be using to support the above activities, and justify the reason for your choice.

Once you have completed your outline, submit it to your facilitator by email (or as an email attachment) for marking and feedback.
