Assessment Guide

Outcome 1 - Assessment exercise

Assessment conditions

This is an open book assessment. You should use and critically reflect on programme notes and reading materials to justify your reasons, recommendations, actions and choices.

Activity

Choose a key learning activity or programme currently offered by your organisation (the one in which you are engaged in supporting learners).

Before you start to write your report discuss your choice with your facilitator.

Write a report of between 1500 to 3000 words.

In your report you must:

  • state what the learning activity/programme is
  • outline the methodology you currently use to support learners during this activity/programme
  • state why you want to introduce online learning support to the activity/ programme, highlighting strengths, weaknesses and benefits
  • identify the differences in approach which you would have to adopt if you were to support learners online
  • identify what tools and techniques you would use to support your learners online
  • explain how your choice of tools and techniques would be integrated and used in the learning activity/programme
  • provide a strategy for evaluating your learners' learning experience
  • identify any problems and barriers which would have to be overcome in your organisation to implement your new model

Ensure that you justify your recommendations, reasons, actions and choices and where practicable demonstrate that you have:

  • an understanding of current initiatives influencing the development of online learning
  • reflected on current and emerging practice in online learning and online learner support
  • engaged in an online threaded discussion

Please provide a bibliography giving details of information sources. Every entry in the bibliography should be explicitly mentioned at least once in the text, and every source referred to in the text should feature in the bibliography.

Before submitting your report as an email attachment to your facilitator, check carefully that you have met all the performance criteria for Outcome 1 of the Unit.

Outcomes 2 and 3 - Assessment exercise

Assessment conditions

Part 1

Outcomes 2 and 3 are assessed through a portfolio of evidence which documents your practice in providing online support to learners. Select the most appropriate activities from your work in Study Section 2 to include as your assessment evidence in your portfolio and cross-reference them to the performance criteria for Outcomes 2 and 3.

Part 2

Provide a commentary, which demonstrates how the evidence presented in the portfolio meets the requirements of the performance criteria for Outcomes 2 and 3. This commentary may include a list that identifies the types of evidence presented in the portfolio and states how this evidence meets the performance criteria. Your commentary could also provide evidence that you have considered the impact that your online support arrangements had on your learners' progress.

Portfolio checklist

In your portfolio you should include reference to:

  • your induction arrangements e.g. the steps you took to prepare your learners to access the online learning support system, your rapport building activities, your records for standards of conduct that you have set with learner and how they were used
  • how you have managed your online support and how you responded to scheduled learning activities and unscheduled spontaneous interactions with your learners
  • how you motivated and communicated with your learners e.g. copies of your email correspondence
  • how you monitored and kept accurate records of your learners' progress though their programme
  • how you maintained the communication flow e.g. records which illustrate how you responded to interaction in a timely and appropriate manner and how you responded to any technical failures
  • the different uses you have made of the online learning support systems and how they contributed to the achievement of the learners' learning aims

You can find further guidance in Study Section 2 which provides many portfolio-building activities.

Your facilitator will be able to give you further direction.

Before submitting your portfolio and commentary to your facilitator, check carefully that you have met all the performance criteria for Outcomes 2 and 3 of the Unit.
