The unit is an SQA Higher National Unit. It is a 40 hour unit which is designed to enable tutors to develop the skills required to provide online support in the delivery of a learning programme.

Learner support will normally be through emails and online forums.

The unit has 3 outcomes:

1. evaluate the implications of providing online support for learners

2. provide online support for learners

3. use online tools and techniques to support learning

Outcome 1 is designed to assist you to think about how providing online support will affect you and your organisation. The outcome involves doing some internet-based research to review current trends and initiatives, participating in online discussions to share your views with others and preparing a report on your findings.

Outcomes 2 and 3 are designed to demonstrate how you have supported a learner using online tool and techniques. Learner support will normally be through emails and online forums.

You will be required to gather a portfolio of evidence of how you organised inductions, communicated with learners, motivated learners, etc. along with a commentary that identifies which items of evidence in your portfolio meet which of the Outcome's performance criteria.

You may wish to look at the full unit specification.

Key points to note

The unit is an introduction to online support, and as such it is not intended to cover everything. It will become part of a series of units covering all aspects of online delivery and assessment.

The unit is about providing online support rather than delivering learning online, i.e. the focus is on using online tools such as email and conferencing systems to support a range of other delivery methods.

The unit is not a training course - tutors are provided with support material which they work through at their own pace, with the support of a facilitator (a tutor for tutors).

It is important to see this as a learning experience - online learning and support is a developing mechanism and you will almost inevitably face issues and technology problems, but the programme provides an excellent opportunity to try out new techniques using email and discussion boards.

Benefits of doing the unit

  • increased awareness of current trends and initiatives

  • opportunity to update skills, contribute to personal development and improve career prospects

  • improved skills-base within your organisation

  • financial assistance from SLN for tutors who successfully support ESF-eligible learners, and financial assistance for such learners
