downloading and installing the site

If you right-click on the link (choose the latest one!) you can choose to Save Link Location (or its equivalent in your browser), and then choose where to save the file locally.

After the file has downloaded, use WinZip, or a similar program, to open the zip file (WinZip calls it an 'archive') and then extract the whole site to a suitable location.

If you have a web server running locally, you can extract the site to a suitable directory on the server, but don't worry if you haven't. The whole site should work locally, with the exception of the search feature, which requires web access, and links on this downloads page. The files on this page all have links to the files on this web server, so again, you need Internet access for the links to work. The main reason for our doing it this way is that it keeps the zip files a manageable size. If you run the site from your hard drive, a CD-ROM or a network drive, look for the file called index.html in the root folder of the site, and open it. It's the home page, and you'll be able to get to any page you want from there with only a few clicks, once you know your way around.

If you install the site on a web server, and the server is running and set up to open index.html if it exists in any folder (as most are, by default), the home page will open automatically when you open the root folder of the site.

Please let us know of any problems you encounter reading the pages offline (or online), and we'll try to find solutions and make updates.

Updates are due at the end of May, end of June, and in September 2000.

Details of changes made can be seen on the what's new page (new: 25.6.00)

The site is not officially released until June 2000, and there are likely to be many changes between now and the end of June, and yet more between June and September. Your suggestions are very welcome.

To take part in the evaluation of these online materials now, you can download and print out this Word document:

original paper-based version (pack)

The original paper-based version of these resource materials is still available from local training providers. It's a fairly weighty folder, and saves you a lot of printing!

We have tried to remain faithful to the original pack wherever possible in these online materials, so you shouldn't find too much variation between the pack and the 'step-by-step route', though there is some.

You can also download pdf versions of the original resource pack:

Candidate Learning Materials

unit_specification.pdf - 172 KB - as you might guess, this is the unit specification

CLMintro - 264 KB - the introductory guide from the candidate learning materials (CLM)

CLMsect1 - 508 KB - Study Section 1

CLMsect2 - 300 KB - Study Section 2

CLMassess - 108 Kb - details of assessments

To download these files, you can right-click on them and select 'Save Link As', or its equivalent in your browser.

Documents for Facilitators and Training Providers

facilitator_guide.pdf - 368 KB - additional advice for facilitators

programme_co-ordinator_guide.pdf - 248 KB

Acrobat Reader

If you left-click on the links, and Acrobat Reader is associated with files with the .pdf extension, they will open, but it's normally better, and more convenient, to download the files to a safe and memorable location (say a folder you set up for this course), so that you can return to them whenever you wish.

If Acrobat Reader is not installed, you can get it here:

free AdobeÆ AcrobatÆ Reader

Unfortunately, you can only get it from the US or Japan, and the file size is either 5.6 or 6.5 Mb (depending on whether you want to be able to search within pdf documents or not), so it may take some time to download!

Alternatively, you could watch out for it on the cover disks of magazines, especially if you don't have unmetered access and a long downloading session would, therefore, affect your phone bill.

Acrobat Reader is freely distributable so it is perfectly legal for you to download the reader for the platform(s) your learners or your colleagues use, and make it availalbe to them on a CD-ROM, on a network drive, or on your organisation's own website or ftp site.

The version of the reader you get will be the very latest (4.05, at the time of writing) if you download via the official site, but be prepared to wait, and if the connection is particularly slow, and via a phone line, you may end up paying quite a bit for it.

Some people may experience problems opening pdf files locally if they try to open them by double-clicking on them in Windows Explorer or in My Computer, even if the Acrobat Reader icon displays, which should indicate that pdf files are associated with it correctly! If you, too, get an error message when you do this, try opening Acrobat Reader and then dragging the .pdf file of your choice across from the Explorer (or My Computer) window, and dropping it on the Reader window.
